Reactions to President Trump's Policies

In response to President Trump’s policies, the Japanese public appears to be increasingly concerned about trade policies and cautious regarding currency policies. There also seem to be feelings of disagreement over environmental policies. It is difficult to find much support, but what is the reality?

Are There Supportive Opinions?

Promoting Economic Growth

Some believe that the Trump administration’s tax cuts and deregulation policies are promoting economic growth. In particular, there are expectations that corporate activity will increase, and business opportunities for Japanese companies in the U.S. market will expand.

Strengthening Japan’s Defense

There are also supporters who argue that Trump’s focus on the Japan-U.S. alliance in Asian security will lead to the strengthening of Japan’s defense capabilities. Many people believe that cooperation with the U.S. is crucial, especially as a deterrent against China and North Korea in Asia.

Reactions to Reciprocal Tariffs

On April 2 (April 3, Japan time), President Trump announced "reciprocal tariffs" against all trade partners. This involves imposing a basic 10% tariff on all imports, with additional tax rates set based on each country’s tariffs and non-tariff barriers.

For Japan, an additional 14% will be added, resulting in a total tariff of 24%. Following this announcement, the following reactions have spread across Japan:

  • Concerns over Economic Impact: There are growing concerns that the reciprocal tariffs will worsen trade relations with the U.S. and negatively affect the economy.
  • Focus on Government Response: People are keenly watching how the Japanese government will negotiate or take countermeasures.
  • International Reactions: There is increasing interest in how other countries, such as the EU and China, might retaliate, as well as how international economic conditions may change.

What About Defense?

  • Reevaluation of Alliance and Concerns Over Increased Defense Burden: Trump’s demand for an increase in the costs of U.S. military presence in Japan has led the Japanese government to consider how to address the increasing defense burden.
  • Need for Strengthening Self-Defense Capabilities: In response to Trump’s isolationist tendencies, Japan may be forced to strengthen its self-defense capabilities, and discussions on revising defense strategies are underway.
  • Expectations for Deeper Cooperation with the U.S.: On the other hand, there are hopes for deepening the Japan-U.S. alliance under the Trump administration, contributing to regional stability.

Overall, there seems to be a rather negative outlook. However, it also seems that Japan needs to maintain independent thinking and engage with many countries in a fair and balanced way.
